About the Writer

Lynn Swycaffer Ringseis

Insatiable wanderlust has consumed me from my youth. Fueling my desire for journeys began in 1982 when I worked in South Africa. Exploring remote game parks in Zimbabwe, Botswana and Zambia solidified my great love of animals. Thoroughly immersing myself in foreign cultures led me to discover my favorite form of travel—sailboats. The sea cast her magical spell on me at a young age. Being a fifth generation native of San Diego county, California, I’ve always been drawn to the ocean.

My first long ocean passage was at the age of 25. I hitched a ride on a 33’ sailboat from Marseilles, France to Martinique, French West Indies, leading me to a sailing career.

My world wanderings have led me to Southern Africa, South East Asia, Europe, South America, Mexico, New Zealand, Australia, Iceland, Fiji and the Eastern Caribbean.

I hold a degree in Travel and Tourism and a U.S. Coast Guard 100 ton Master Mariner License. My varied careers include working as a chef and first mate on crewed charter sailboats in the Caribbean, a travel agent in San Diego, for a winery tasting room in Sonoma Valley, hotel work in Wilderness, South Africa and in Munich, Germany and as a customer service agent for four commercial airlines.

Travel introduces you to the people you never expected to meet, becoming the ones you never thought you could live without, until you have to. Experiencing loss of loved ones is somehow balanced out by the unexpected friendships and love found by putting yourself out there in the world.

Travel teaches you who you are. After nearly four decades on the road and sea, I’m still learning how to present myself to the world, as I strive to spread humility and humor.

Writing about my travels and experiences lets me re-live my journeys. Thank you for joining me!
